### The visible-but-untouchable variant
A particularly rich sub-shape: the separation is enforced by a *visible* barrier , a magical town line, a portal seal, a one-way curse, a glass wall in a prison, an ocean. The characters can see and speak to each other but cannot cross.
This variant has its own emotional gramma
## Two-track POV for separation / time-travel arcs
A powerful structural device: **alternating-POV chapters where both characters carry the same wound and the same yearning across distance**, each unable to reach the other yet.
The pleasure:
- The reader is in two heads with the same wound and the same hope. Dramatic
### A. Memory loss / amnesia variant
One character has the past. The other has lost it , by amnesia spell, by trauma, by curse, by an injury, by a memory wipe, by time-rewriting. The remembering one carries the relationship alone while the lost one builds her sense of the world from scratch.
The remembering one canno
### B. Anonymous-identity / epistolary variant
Both characters share the present, but at least one does not know the other's identity. Letters under fake names; online dating profiles; pen-pal exchanges set up by a meddling friend. They fall slowly through writing while the reader holds the truth.
**What it earns:**
### What both variants share
Asymmetric knowledge between the characters, with the reader holding the symmetric view. Both have a "they will love her again with the truth" climax. The writer's discipline is the same: **show the loved-but-not-yet-known person being chosen for her real self, even as the surface-knowledg
### C. The established-couple-who-doesn't-know-it arc [Ronance]
A third asymmetric variant, and one of the most structurally delightful: **the relationship already exists in every functional sense. The characters just haven't named it.** The reader is ahead of both of them for the entire fic.
> "We have been dating f
## Post-getting-together fic is a valid story shape
The romantic arc is not the only arc. Fics about life **after** the couple is established are fully valid. Stakes shift from "will they get together" to "can they hold the life they built." Kids' problems, careers, family-of-origin tension, illness, the next external
## The dark register
The reader reads brutal angst. She actively seeks out fic where one character genuinely wounds the other , cheating, calculated deception, betrayal of trust, hundred-thousand-word separations.
She reads:
- **Cheating as an actual moral failure**, not a misunderstanding.
- **Toxic dynamics** in es
## The forward-pointing ending
**Non-negotiable.** The reader does not read tragedy. The path to the ending can pass through hell , betrayal, separation, near-death, addiction, war , but the ending must be a **forward-pointing image:** engagement, marriage, adoption, a quiet morning, a kiss in front of the friend grou
## Pet-name economy
Pet names do enormous emotional work for almost no word cost. Two extremes both work:
**Saturated [Lexark / apocalyptic]:** *Hodnes, Lil Bit, babe, love, goufa, gorgeous.* Multiple endearments per scene. Crisis-level intimacy on the page constantly. Apocalyptic settings *justify* higher density th
## Canon shorthand
The reader and writer both know the source material. Use it.
- **Single canonical words import the entire emotional weight of canon.** *Hodnes* (love) imports the Lexa/Clarke mythology in one syllable [Clexa]. *Wanheda* (commander of death) is an entire identity in one word [Clexa]. *Ai gonplei ste
### The rescue song [Ronance / universal]
Each character has **one song that represents what they are fighting to survive for** , not just "this is their favorite song" but "this is the music that means I'm still a person who can want things."
In the Stranger Things fandom: Max has "Running Up That Hill" (Kate Bush).
### The supernatural as emotional truth machine [Ronance / Clexa / universal]
In fictions with a supernatural threat (Vecna, the Mind Flayer, Reapers, Heda politics, ALIE's city of light), **the monster or power often externalizes what the character cannot say out loud.**
Vecna doesn't show Nancy her death. He shows
## Found family
The reader loves a cast that *expands.* The friend ensemble is the chorus around the couple , teasing, enabling, witnessing, getting their own arcs.
### Recurring archetypes
- **The blunt best friend** , Raven for Clarke [Clexa], Maree for Elyza [Lexark], Ruby for Emma [SwanQueen]. Calls her on her bullshit. Sharp humor. The one who says "just talk to her."
- **The sister-figure on the guarded one's side** , Anya for Lexa [Clexa/Lexark], Zelena (reformed) for Regi
### Friend pairings the reader loves
**Raven/Anya, Octavia/Lincoln, Monty/Miller, Ruby/Belle, Ruby/Mulan** , these are recurring side ships across many fics. A fic that pairs off the friends does extra emotional work for the reader.
### The rule
At least three of these archetypes should be present and recurring, each with their own voice and one or two subplots. They are not props; they are an ecosystem. **The hearth around the couple's fire.**
