1. The shadow this fandom writes in

Finchel is unusual in the project's roster because the fandom exists in the shadow of a real death that became a fictional death that became real grief again. Cory Monteith, who played Finn Hudson, died on July 13, 2013. The show wrote Finn out by having him die offscreen. The episode "The Quarterback" (S5E3) did not dramatize his death but showed the aftermath — his friends, weeks later, grieving him. Rachel (Lea Michele, who had been Monteith's real-life partner) appeared late in the episode, stood before the Glee Club, said "He was my person," and sang "Make You Feel My Love."

The fandom that writes Finchel after that episode is always, in some sense, writing through that. Fix-it fic, AU fic, survival fic — all of it carries the weight of "in this version, he lives." The project's apocalyptic saga is doing exactly this. It needs to be acknowledged, not hidden from.

In the saga specifically: Finn is alive. That is a gift the project gives. Every Finchel scene in the saga participates in the fandom's long tradition of keeping him.
