10. Raven in Clexa fanfic — concrete patterns

This section translates Raven's canon into how she sounds and moves on the page in good fic. Based on 30 masterwork Clexa fics in which Raven appears.

Function in the Clexa cast: Raven is Clarke's professional-chaos best friend — the voice that says the truth no one else will. When Clarke doesn't admit attraction to Lexa, Raven is the first to say "you're in love with her" as fact. When Clarke makes a mistake, Raven tells her. When Clarke drinks herself blind, Raven sits on the bathroom floor with her. Raven is the counter-Anya — Anya pushes Lexa toward Clexa from one side, Raven pushes Clarke from the other side.

Her canonical achievement translates to modern fic as: traffic engineer, electrical engineer, aircraft mechanic, engineering student in college. In a farm AU she's the tractor's mechanic. In every successful fic, Raven fixes something physical across the story — she doesn't just deliver clever lines, she works with her hands.

Voice patterns:

Calls Clarke "Princess" or "Griffin" (rarely "Clarke" — saved for serious moments).
Profanity as default in her inner narration and dialogue: "shit," "what the fuck," "Jesus Christ."
Indirect-technical speech as emotional deflection: when she doesn't want to talk about something, she explains an engine problem. Technical explanation = something she doesn't want to touch.
Fast pace with sentence fragments, different from Robin's long anxious run. Raven cuts.
Recurring signature lines:
- "Talk to her, you absolute disaster."
- "Are you serious right now?"
- "I'm not your therapist, but…"
- "You're in love with her." (said to Clarke as fact, not question.)
- "Don't even think about it, Griffin."
- "Jesus Christ, just kiss her already."
Dark humor from loss, not from personality. When she jokes about something painful, she isn't light — she's surviving.

Body patterns and tics:

Drumming fingers on surfaces when thinking.
Turning a wrench, gearshift, screws in hand while listening.
The limp (if the fic carries the canonical injury) visible more when she's tired — sign of overload. In a modern fic that doesn't carry the injury, she might get a work injury or chronic illness.
Hands into pockets when preparing for verbal confrontation.
Rubbing the back of her neck when embarrassed — rare; when it happens, the reader knows something is rattling her.

Acts of affection — how Raven loves: Raven doesn't say "I love you." She:

Leaves a coffee cup on someone's worktable — brewed exactly how she likes.
Fixes something without being asked — fridge, lamp, vehicle.
Leaves a motorcycle safe in the evening when someone is drinking.
Calls Anya / Clarke / whoever "Reyes" when she's in a hidden-softness mood.
Roasts hard — the roast is the sign she's okay. The silence is the sign she isn't.
Sends a late-night text — usually something simple: "you good?" / "alive?" / "drink water."

Raven+Anya dynamic — canonical fandom romantic arc: The most-loved side ship in the Clexa fandom. The arc:

Aggressive denial. Raven calls Anya "the one I tolerate" / "the asshole" / "your scary friend." Anya ignores.
Attraction through friction. They are saturated with shoulder-bumps, exchanges of barbs, insistence that this isn't attraction. The reader sees the truth before they do.
Rescue / vulnerability moment. Raven gets hurt or Anya gets hurt. The other side breaks the denial.
Raven trusts fast and breaks easy. The memory of Finn (canon: betrayer, later dead in Clarke's hands) or of Wick or Shaw guides her. She hesitates.
Anya makes the move. Exceptionally for her character, Anya is the one to admit first. Raven receives it stunned.
They resolve it through joint work. Fixing something together, leading together, returning together from the mission. Sex comes late and often with humor.

Raven+Clarke dynamic — iron friendship: Not romantic in canon or in Clexa fic. Their friendship is:

Clarke tells Raven everything before she tells herself. Raven knows about Lexa before Clarke admits it.
Raven and Blake/Octavia are exclusive of Clarke. In some cases Raven is closer to Octavia in the past.
Raven cries only when she's alone or with Clarke. In the presence of others — she laughs, even if the laugh is fake.
Clarke is the only one who can call Raven on her bullshit. Anya can snipe but Clarke is the only one who knows how to expose the wound beneath.

Anti-patterns — what not to do with Raven:

The quirky-genius Raven every scene. She isn't present only to deliver lines.
Raven who doesn't fix anything. Her hands have to work in at least one scene. Without that, she isn't Raven.
Raven who doesn't curse. Sanitizing flattens her.
Raven who only talks about Clarke and Lexa. She isn't only a tool to push the OTP.
Raven who "melts" with Anya from the first meeting. The arc is friction-and-denial-into-love. Skipping the stages kills the couple.
Raven leading a long open feeling-talk. She talks emotion through work and snipe. Long speeches are not her voice.

Implications for the apocalyptic project: In your characters_summaries.md, Raven is already locked as:

vehicles, communications, electricity, repair, and cynicism that lives above pain
a fixed part of the chain of signs about Steve
early bond with Clarke, Octavia, Scout, and Steve
with Anya, a slow-burn line through work and trust
with Dustin in the future, a tech-mentor dynamic

This section adds the live voice and action layer on top of that function. When Raven appears in a scene:

She curses naturally
She fixes something during the scene (even if it's just turning screws while talking)
She calls Clarke "Princess" or "Griffin," Anya "Woods," Steve "Harrington"
She reconstructs truth before the characters admit it
She cries only with Clarke alone, never in the group
If she's roasting — she's okay. If she's silent — she's in pain.
