e. Specific Vauseman anti-patterns

e. Specific Vauseman anti-patterns

  • Making them immediately warm and soft. Their softness costs something. If it's cheap, it's wrong.
  • Writing Alex as only a sexy bad girl. She is also exhausted, self-aware, and hates her own sentimentality.
  • Making Piper purely reactive. She has agency, including destructive agency. She chooses into things. She also hides things — the inheritance, the worst nights, what she did to protect herself.
  • Fast-forwarding the terms. They need to negotiate their re-entry. If Alex just takes Piper back without conditions, it reads false to everything the character is.
  • Forgetting Nicky. Nicky is always in the room, even when she's not. She is Alex's most honest mirror and Piper's most honest interrogator. A Vauseman fic without Nicky's voice (at least echoed) loses its truth-telling function.
  • Making the institutional obstacles disappear too quickly. Even post-prison, the rules echo. The ankle bracelet, the visitation glass, the guards — these leave marks that show up in how they touch.
  • Writing "I love you" from Alex before it's earned. The fandom knows the difference between "I heart you" and "I love you." Alex saying the full thing is the fic's emotional climax. Don't spend it early.
  • Skipping the found family. Red, Nicky, Taystee, Cal — they bear witness to this relationship. They are the chorus. Without them, there is no context for how hard-won any sweetness is.
  • Writing Alex's confidence as unshakeable. The scar in Little Earthquakes breaks it. The 13-year-old girl in wrong shoes is still inside her. Physical damage reaches that girl directly. Alex can be rattled. Beauty was armor she built; it is not native to her.
  • Forgetting Diane. Diane Vause's absence is inside everything Alex does or doesn't allow herself. In kid fic: Alex thinking "my mom would have been good with him." In Diane-death fic: the only moment Alex says "please." The wound is not backstory — it is live.
