The fake teeth are the fandom's load-bearing physical detail. They are Shelby's small vanity secret — not the ideological one, but the one that is purely about not being caught imperfect. Leah exposes them. Toni makes a joke instead of weaponizing them. That choice is the hinge. In fic, the teeth function as shorthand for everything Shelby has been hiding, and the relief of being seen without the performance.
"Be the most of it" is Toni's declaration in code: I see who you could be when no one's watching, and I want you to be her. It appears in fic as a recurring phrase, sometimes literal, sometimes echoed. It is the moment Toni revealed she had been watching Shelby with something other than suspicion.
The lychee tree is the canonical site of first fully realized intimacy. In fic it appears as a location, a memory, a touchstone. "By the lychee tree" is shorthand for the moment everything changed, and writers use it without needing to explain it.
Shelby's hair is a visual arc that the fandom uses consciously. Short and controlled at the start; loosening across the island; eventually wild. In AU fics, hair state is used as an indicator of where Shelby is in her self-acceptance arc.
Martha as Toni's anchor is always present even when Martha is not in the scene. Toni's capacity to love Shelby is downstream of her love for Martha. The fic that forgets Martha is missing the template for why Toni can love at all.
Dave Goodkind as the structural threat is not a cartoon villain in the fandom. The show built him as a man who loves Shelby in the way he understands love, and who therefore causes damage with warmth and certainty rather than hatred. The fics that handle him best understand this: a father who would genuinely believe conversion therapy is an act of love is more dangerous than a hateful one.
