2. She doesn't have a "string of exes" in canon as Clarke does, so Costia remains the great central shadow entering with her into every room, both emotionally and politically.

What this does to Clexa: Nothing between them is born in innocence. Clarke arrives after Finn and after Mount Weather. Lexa arrives after Costia and after years of ruling through loneliness. So even when they want to, they cannot really enter this as a "clean" couple.
