Octavia died in part 1. But she anchors part 1. Clarke and Raven survived her loss together, and the grief is named — through Scout, through Raven's irritability, through Clarke's quieter mourning — for the rest of the fic.

In the early chapters where she's still alive, she is a living unit with Clarke and Raven, the chaos third of the trio. Her death is the foundational grief that Clarke and Raven carry forward.

Working sentence: Octavia Blake is a kid who was hidden too long, and so when she finally lives, she always lives all the way to the edge.
