3. The Mike-El dynamic

Mike is El's first love. The relationship begins in season 1, breaks and re-bonds across the seasons, and remains one of the central emotional axes of the show. They go through real distance issues (in season 3 they're young and a little too "movie-coupley"; in season 4 the distance is real). [1][2]

What's important to know for writing:

Mike struggles to say "I love you" in season 4.
El is afraid she's not enough for him beyond her powers.
They love each other but don't always speak the same language.
