15. Steve Harrington in Ronance fic — appendix
Steve's voice and general canon are in characters_voices.md File 3 and in this file's Main Characters section. This appendix is how Steve functions specifically inside Ronance fic — his structural role in the romance.
His central Ronance function: the enabling third wall.
Steve is not a triangle. He is not a rival. He is not a prop. He is the person who sees the whole picture before either of the main characters does, who has emotional investment in both of them, and who deliberately uses that position to bring them together.
Specific Ronance Steve behaviors:

"I'm her brother." The line he tells the hospital nurse. The line the fandom takes as his central declaration. He claims Robin as family in the most basic administrative way — not romantically, not protectively in a possessive sense, but as kin. This is his highest register.

Knowing Robin's signals better than she does. He recognizes when Robin is "gone" on someone before Robin admits it. He's the one who tells Nancy "she really likes you" before Robin would ever say it herself. He catalogs Robin's body language the way a sibling does — not from attraction, from years of attention.

Engineering the moment. In almost every Ronance fic where the couple finally gets together, Steve does something to make the space for it. In hospital fics: he moves over and lets Nancy take his place at Robin's side. In video store fics: he arranges the shifts. In group settings: he deflects everyone else so it's just Robin and Nancy in the corner. He is the architect of the Ronance resolution, almost never the actor.

The grief companion to Nancy. When something terrible happens to Robin (or in the group), Steve and Nancy find each other first. Their relationship is the echo of their old romantic history, now converted into a shared protective project. They sit in his kitchen in the middle of the night drinking tea and not talking about the thing they're both thinking about. This is their specific intimacy.

The mixtape. He and Robin made a comfort tape together last summer — they couldn't agree on music so they compromised. He plays it for Nancy when he thinks she needs it. He plays it for Robin when she doesn't know she needs it. It's the most intimate object in his possession.

"She burns the burgers." He always burns the burgers when he's grilling. The kids tease him. He takes it as a personal challenge next time and burns them again. This is the gentle comedy that makes him the safe center of the group.

His absence is felt. When Steve isn't in the room, Robin is a little looser. When Steve is in the room, Robin calibrates to him before anyone else. The group notices when he and Robin have been fighting (they bicker constantly) because the energy shifts.
Steve's voice in Ronance fic specifically:
- When Robin is the subject: his voice loses the banter-armor. He becomes direct. "She likes her." / "I know she does." / "Will you please just let her be happy."
- When Nancy is the subject: he becomes careful. He knows he had Nancy, he knows she doesn't want him back, he knows the history. He handles Nancy like something he once broke that healed into something stronger.
- With Robin and Nancy in the same room: he is performing normalcy very consciously. He manages the room so they don't have to.
What NOT to do with Steve in Ronance fic:
- Make him jealous of Ronance.
- Make him moping over Nancy while she's falling for Robin.
- Have him be a stumbling block to the romance.
- Make him only comic relief.
- Forget that he is Robin's person first, and that role has weight before anything else.
