Karen is one of the parents who survives. The Wheeler household in the early chapters — until they evacuate — is one of the few sites of pre-apocalyptic warmth in the saga. Karen grows across the parts into someone harder, sharper, and more present than the mother she was on Maple Street.

Working sentence: Karen Wheeler is a woman who used to be a suburban mom, and the apocalypse turned out to be the thing that gave her permission to become something else.
