16. Kids in Ronance fic — appendix

The Stranger Things kids are not background in Ronance fic — they are an active chorus. They notice things, they say things, they create the social texture around Robin and Nancy. Each kid has a specific function.

Dustin Henderson: Robin's other person. He is the kid most emotionally central to her experience, her quasi-little-brother, her "I've known you the longest!" kid. In Ronance fic:

He is the one who tries to set Robin up romantically (with Steve, with random people, with Nancy eventually) while Robin protests
He is the one who talks about D&D mechanics as the answer to every problem, including resurrection
His grief for Eddie bleeds into everything post-season-4 (he took a long time convincing Robin to even come to this thing)
When Robin comes back to life: he collapses against her, body heaving, before he can form words
His voice: "We've known each other the longest" competitive warmth, "You're her favorite" protest energy, D&D reference as first language
Do not: Make him only exposition. Give him his own grief alongside the Ronance plot.

Max Mayfield: The one who challenges Robin without cruelty. In Ronance fic:

She and Robin have a specific teasing-as-respect dynamic — they insult each other and both grin
"Mayfield" / "Buckley" — they use each other's surnames, like equals
She won't listen to Robin about sunscreen but she'll listen to Nancy — this asymmetry is a comic beat
She is also carrying the weight of Billy's death and her own survival — her sharp exterior is earned
With El: their friendship is a soft counterpoint to the sharper Robin/Max dynamic
Do not: Write her as purely funny. She carries grief that hasn't been named.

Mike Wheeler: "Little Wheeler" to Robin. He bristles at this but doesn't tell her to stop. In Ronance fic:

He is Nancy's little brother and therefore always slightly outside the Ronance circle but aware of it
He writes letters to Will — this is always present, his missing-Will grief
His grief is turned inward, a "wall he always has up"
He is the one who notices when Nancy is being weird about Robin before anyone asks him to notice
He rolls his eyes at everything and is usually right
The cannonball contest: he earns negative points for "being a little shit"
Do not: Write him as only annoyed-kid. He loves his sister, he loves Will, he loves his people — it just comes out sideways.

Will Byers: Robin calls him her "favorite" (at the cannonball contest, in quiet moments, in small gestures). In Ronance fic:

He receives Robin's gentleness in a way the other kids don't — perhaps because they both understand what it means to be seen as wrong
He is absent (California) through most of the senior-year arc, which means his presence is felt through his absence: Mike writing letters, Nancy looking for him in the basement
He comes to Robin's bedside when she's in the hospital and stays until he knows she's okay
His voice is quiet and observant
Do not: Forget his Mike/Will undercurrent. It runs underneath everything.

Lucas Sinclair: Present, warm, part of the group. In Ronance fic:

He is usually with Max, bickering — they are a pair
His basketball team pride is always there (Steve can see it in his face)
He earns "bonus points for extreme style" from Robin at the cannonball contest
His voice: Competitive with Max, generous with Robin, loyal to the group.

Erica Sinclair: "I sold my soul to a ten-year-old." In Ronance fic:

Robin has permanent guilt about Erica (she almost got her killed in the Russian lab) and therefore does whatever Erica demands forever
"For life, Buckley. A deal's a deal." — Erica enforces this with relish
She is always demanding ice cream, "important information," or access to things she shouldn't have
Her relationship with Robin is the funniest in the group: pure extortion, mutual fondness
Do not: Make her just a comedy beat. She's terrifyingly sharp.
