2. Who she is in canon

Max comes from California with her mother, stepfather Neil, and stepbrother Billy. She moves to Hawkins and quickly finds herself entering the Party — first against her will, then by choice. The wiki emphasizes that her character is built on tomboy energy, defensive sarcasm, gradually exposed sensitivity, and bonds that become very deep especially with Lucas and El. [1]
