Why Henry is architectural, not supporting

In Clexa, Anya and Raven are romance-engineers — they push the couple together but exist outside the couple. In SwanQueen, Henry is inside the couple from the first page. He is biologically Emma's and legally Regina's; both women love him before they tolerate each other; the romance grows around him, not despite him.

This makes Henry's role unique among "kid characters" in fanfic. He is not a side character a couple acquires. He is the reason the couple exists. Every interaction between Emma and Regina is filtered through their joint responsibility for him. Every reconciliation is for his sake before it is for theirs. The "Swan-Mills Family" tag is canonical in fandom because the family came first; the romance is the family discovering it was always also a love story.
