"My wings are made of plastic": Diane's death is the fic's catalyst. Alex calls Piper in the middle of the night — the only moment where Alex begs. "Please. Pipes, please." The vulnerability is total and it is specifically because Diane is gone and Piper is the only person Alex would call.
Monster verse: Alex looking at Max: "My mom would have been good with him." Diane absent from every joy. The specific grief of accumulating experiences the dead person will never see.
Little Earthquakes: Alex fighting through recovery alone, knowing she can't call her mom to talk about it.
She is the origin of Alex's capacity for love and Alex's difficulty accepting it. Alex's mother loved her unconditionally; Alex doesn't quite believe she deserves unconditional love from anyone else.
