d. Essential Vauseman beats

A Vauseman fic missing one of these will feel incomplete:

The terms — Alex's return always has conditions. Written out, or stated explicitly. "If I take you back, there will be no one else." The terms are the love declaration.
"I heart you" vs. "I love you" — the distinction must be acknowledged. If Alex says "I love you" before the fic earns it, the reader notices.
Alex's self-doubt voice — "don't fuck this up Vause" or its equivalent. At least one moment where the reader sees underneath the competence.
The letter — at least one written communication from Alex that is more honest than what she would say out loud. Or a reference to such a letter.
Piper's rage coming out wrong — she does something Piper-havoc: goes too far, controls too much, protects too hard. The moment lands as both comprehensible and a little frightening.
The found family bearing witness — Nicky, Red, or Taystee saying the thing that is true but neither Alex nor Piper will say about themselves or each other.
A physical moment charged by institutional rules — even post-prison, the rules still echo. A touch that would have been forbidden. A hug that is too long and neither woman pulls back.
The sleeping position — even once. Even without narration. The reader knows what it means.
"Just live through this" or its equivalent — the floor, not the ceiling. The hope that doesn't promise anything.
A food beat — broth in prison, baked ziti outside, Ethiopian coffee, or equivalent. Food is how this fandom signals safety.
The "please" moment — the one time Alex begs. It is almost always triggered by Diane's death, or by the threat of losing Piper when she is most alone. It is devastating precisely because Alex never says it. One fic should earn it.
The not-quite-right current relationship — In AU fics and modern AUs, both Alex and Piper are almost always in a relationship that is "alright" but not alive. The inadequacy of the current relationship is the first proof that the real thing exists elsewhere. The reader should feel this before either character does.
