8. Anti-patterns

Don't write Toni's anger as simple aggression. It is grief with a sharp edge — the shape abandonment takes when someone has learned to be faster than the exit. The fics that flatten her to "angry girl" miss why she is compelling.

Don't resolve Shelby's coming-out arc in one conversation with her father. Dave Goodkind is not a cartoonish villain who collapses easily. His love for Shelby is real. That is why the damage is real.

Don't skip the Martha-Toni relationship in order to focus on the romance. Without Martha, Toni doesn't have a template for the trust the relationship requires. Martha is not background; she is the proof of concept.

Don't reduce Shelby to "suppressed lesbian in pageant costume." She is genuinely skilled at managing groups under pressure — the ice-breakers, the optimism, the crisis composure are real capabilities she developed and that benefit everyone on the island. They are not only a facade.
