8. Anti-patterns
Don't flatten Rachel's ambition into neurosis. Her drive is real and it is legitimate. Fics that treat her Broadway dreams as the obstacle to happiness are misreading her. Her ambition is who she is; the relationship has to coexist with it, not cure her of it.
Don't write Finn as passive. He is slow to act but he is not passive. When he decides something, he commits with his whole body. The gentleness is real; the backbone underneath it is also real. The fic that makes him merely sweet without the stubbornness has lost him.
Don't skip the grief layer in post-S3 fics without acknowledging it. Even in fix-it, even in AU, the fandom knows what happened. A Finchel fic that feels too easy — where they never almost-lose each other — is in denial about the love story's actual temperature.
Don't make their fights about misunderstanding. Their fights are about real incompatibilities that they manage rather than resolve: her need to be seen vs. his need to be present; her future-orientation vs. his now-orientation; her city and his town. These are not misunderstandings. They are the couple's actual tension, and a fight that paper-bags them into a misunderstanding is a lie.
