2. Who they are

2. Who they are

Finn Hudson — Quarterback who joined Glee Club. Son of a soldier father who died in the Gulf War (a lie he believed for years — his father actually deserted). Raised by his mother Carole alone. Stepbrother to Kurt Hummel. Athletic, clumsy, slow to think and fast to feel. His leadership is not authority — it is warmth. People follow him because he believes in them before they believe in themselves.

Rachel Berry — Only child of two gay fathers who raised her to believe she was a star. Ambition as survival mechanism. Bullied through school for being "too much." Singer of extraordinary talent. Organized, self-promoting, occasionally ruthless on behalf of her dream, deeply loyal to the small number of people she lets past the performance. Her therapist-speak and self-aggrandizement are armor; what's underneath is a girl who spent her whole childhood being told she was both too much and not enough.

The dynamic: The fandom calls them "tethered." They keep finding each other across separations that should have been final. Rachel is too much for everyone except Finn. Finn is not enough — not academic enough, not ambitious enough, not New York enough — for everyone except Rachel. The relationship works because each one believes in the part of the other that the world has rejected. Finn believes Rachel's talent is real when the school treats it as delusion. Rachel believes Finn's heart is his greatest qualification when the world tells him it doesn't count.
