2. Who they are

Shelby Goodkind — From Fort Travis, Texas. Christian conservative family; her father Dave is a pastor who runs a conversion therapy group for men out of their house. Shelby has been competing in pageants her entire life. She presents as radiant, optimistic, perfectly composed — every difficult situation met with a smile and an ice-breaker game. Beneath this: fake front teeth she has worn since knocking them out years ago, a female friend from home who died by suicide after they shared a charged intimate moment, and her own completely suppressed lesbian identity. Her hair visibly lengthens and loosens over Season 1's arc — the fandom reads this as intentional, a visual meter for Shelby's self-discovery.

Toni Shalifoe — From a rez-adjacent town in northern Minnesota. Ojibwe. Her father was never present; her mother is an addict in and out of rehab. She has been in the foster system most of her life. Openly and unapologetically lesbian. She has anger issues and abandonment issues that are functionally the same thing: she pushes people away to test whether they'll leave, and is not surprised when they do. Her one unshakeable attachment is to Martha Blackburn, her best friend since childhood. Past relationship: Regan. Her softness exists; it is just almost entirely directed at Martha and, with enormous resistance, eventually at Shelby.
