4. The Lima/New York axis

This is structural, not incidental. It is present in every Finchel fic because the show made it the couple's central obstacle. Rachel's dream is New York — NYADA, Broadway, being a star. Lima is where Finn is rooted, where his stepfather Burt has the garage, where his mother lives, where the Glee Club is.

The show broke them at the train station at the end of Season 3. Finn sent Rachel to New York alone — as an act of love, so she wouldn't shrink herself to stay with him. The fandom has been rewriting that moment ever since.

In the saga this axis is dissolved — the apocalypse has collapsed geography — but the emotional residue remains. Rachel still has the pull toward something larger than survival. Finn still has the instinct to stay and be useful to the people in front of him. These are not conflicts in the post-apocalyptic world; they are the characters. The fic can use them as complementary rather than opposing.
