4. How their relationship looks in the show, stage by stage

Stage A — distance, judgment, and early image In the extended canon and the wiki, Robin knew Nancy from before they really became a pair, and she sees her as "priss." Additionally, on the Barb page it is noted that Barb was Robin's childhood friend, and they drifted apart when Barb started spending time with Nancy. Fanlore emphasizes that this rests also on supplementary material like Rebel Robin — meaning it is not pure screen but canon extension. [3][5][7]

What this does for writing: There's a small but important root of social jealousy, missing out, and class. Robin sees Nancy from outside — a "correct" girl, pretty, organized, wanted. Nancy doesn't know at all that she's seen this way.

Stage B — season 3, brief contact and a not-quite beginning In season 3 Robin still talks about Nancy through Steve, mostly as who she thinks Nancy is rather than who Nancy actually is. The screen barely gives them couple-material yet, but it does plant a very important seed: Robin puts Nancy in a very clear category, and then the show is going to force her to dismantle that category. Stage C — season 4, friction to partnership This is the heart of Ronance in canon. According to the relationship pages on the wiki, Robin joins Nancy in investigating Victor Creel, at first annoying her without meaning to, but quickly proving herself through search work, finding a connection, improvisation, and persuasion. [3][4]

Key stations:

The library — Robin talks too fast, Nancy is tense and bothered by it.
Pennhurst — Robin wears Nancy's clothes, suffers in them, then impresses Nancy when she manages to convince Dr. Hatch to let them in. [4]
The forest — Robin says she "wants happiness for her friends," and Nancy answers, "So does that make us friends?" That's the formal transition moment from friction to shared language. [4]
Lover's Lake — Robin tries to stop Nancy from jumping, Nancy jumps, Robin jumps in after her. [4]
Upside Down — Robin saves Nancy from a Demobat, Nancy makes sure Robin doesn't step on the vines, Robin holds her hand, Nancy steadies her. [4]

In simple words: The show shows them building trust through execution, not through confession. They don't sit down to talk about feelings. They survive together. And the bond becomes real from there.

Stage D — season 5, where it stands Netflix's official materials for season 5 keep placing Nancy and Robin on the same team fighting against Vecna, but do not make them a canon couple. In parallel, the official character guide notes that Robin has a "sweet moment" with Vickie. [1] In other words: Ronance remains not-canonical as a romance, but continues to be very canonical as a pair with a strong bond.
