4. The wound structure

Both characters are operating from the same core damage — I cannot be who I actually am — but from opposite directions.

Shelby's wound: She is not the person she has been performing. Everything about her public self was built to survive her family and her community. Her actual self — the lesbian, the person with fake teeth, the person who loved a girl who died — has been underground so long she barely recognizes it. The island is the first place where the performance can slip. Toni is the first person who actively helps it slip, not by pushing, but by naming what she sees and offering the island as permission.

Toni's wound: Everyone leaves, and she will always be the reason why. She lashes out to confirm the story she already believes about herself. The anger is protective — if you cause the exit, you're less surprised by it. Her specific terror with Shelby is that Shelby's acceptance feels conditional on conditions Toni cannot name: the religiosity, the family, the world waiting for Shelby back in Texas. When Shelby says "that's a sin," Toni isn't just hurt. She is recognizing the familiar shape of the threat.
