3. Sara and Ava's specific wound structure

The fandom understands both characters to be operating from the same core fear — I am not the kind of person who gets to have this — but from completely different entry points.

Sara's entry: I have done too much. I have been too many dark things. I am a killer. I don't deserve to be loved like a regular person. This manifests as: not protecting herself, not asking for what she needs, refusing to admit she is struggling. She protects everyone else in the room and does not know how to be protected.

Ava's entry: I was made, not born. My memories are fake. My parents aren't real. I could be replaced by another Ava tomorrow. Can anyone truly choose me — me specifically — when I am technically a copy? This manifests as: extreme competence performance, by-the-book rigidity, the terror of being discovered as insufficient.

The pairing works in fic because the reassurance each needs is exactly what the other can give. Sara knows Ava is real because Sara has extensive experience with people who are not — she has looked at enough death and survival and chaos to know the difference between manufactured and earned. Ava knows Sara deserves happiness because Ava has no patience for Sara's self-mythology about being too dark and broken; the Ava who wrote herself up in her own Time Bureau review for "lacking a delicate touch" has no interest in anyone's noble suffering.
