Canon-set / post-season-3 / senior year. Robin and Nancy orbit each other in Hawkins. The video store. The newspaper. The group. The avoidance. This is the most common setting.
Season 4 partnership arc. Victor Creel, Pennhurst, the Upside Down. The investigation builds trust. The "Nancy's shot in the dark was a bullseye" arc.
Starcourt aftermath / concussed Robin. Nancy takes care of injured Robin. The "You're pretty" moment. First physical intimacy through caretaking.
Death-and-resurrection. Robin dies (usually in the season 4 battle), the group grieves, El brings her back (D&D: Raise Dead). The group's love for Robin is revealed through their grief. Nancy clings to Robin's ring.
Robin gets Vecna'd instead of Nancy. Robin's worst fear is revealed: rejection by her friends for being gay. The locker room, the "Dyke Disease" note, her friends turning into monsters who spit at her. Rescue by music — "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun."
Period-typical homophobia as physical threat. Jason Carver and the basketball team weaponize Robin's queerness. She is physically attacked. Nancy's fury when she sees Robin hurt is the revelation moment of the fic. The fandom uses this trope to name what Nancy refuses to name herself.
College AU. No monsters. Steve and Robin roommates or college friends. Nancy enters through Steve. The slow friendship, the flirtation Robin misses.
Wrong number / epistolary. Robin and Nancy connect anonymously before they meet. Usually Robin has the wrong number for Steve; Nancy answers; they build a connection through text before faces.
Apology-as-courtship. Robin does something wrong (doorbell-ditch, a blunder, a misunderstanding), tries to apologize, is rebuffed, keeps coming back with increasingly elaborate gestures — pizza with M&Ms spelling "I'M SORRY," notes under the welcome mat, ice cream sandwiches. The exchange of notes becomes the epistolary connection. "I'll win over your forgiveness, you'll see."
The 36 Questions / structured interview. Nancy's journalist instinct applied to getting to know Robin. Questions from a magazine ("Questions for Developing Relationships"). Robin's defenses come down through structured conversation. Nancy realizes mid-question that she's been thinking of Robin as her "partner in crime," not Jonathan.
Wheeler household as haven. Robin's house is destroyed (post-Vecna earthquake) or she has nowhere to go. Nancy invites her to stay with the Wheelers. Karen Wheeler becomes a surrogate mother. The basement couch. The domestic intimacy of sharing a family.
Robin has powers (time-reversal). Robin's emotional intensity at Nancy's near-death triggers supernatural time-reversal. She rewinds time to save Nancy, bleeds from the nose each time. Nancy figures out it was Robin, not El. Steve doesn't believe her.
Established relationship domestic. Set after the couple is together, often post-season 5. Cooking, dishes, Nancy wearing Robin's clothes, the sneaking through windows, the "same time tomorrow?" rhythm.
One-shot collection. Multiple AUs and canon moments in a single collection. The most common format for multi-chapter Ronance fic.
Post-season 5 modern. Very recent (2025-2026 publication). Canon divergence after the final season. The war is over; the domestic life begins.
