Ted Wheeler is Nancy and Mike's father, husband to Karen, and one of the more emotionally distant characters in the show. He is presented mostly as a passive, distracted figure — the recliner father, the man who falls asleep in front of the TV. Beneath the comic surface, the show paints a marriage that lacks emotional content and a father who has effectively disconnected from his family. [1][2]
