Functions in SwanQueen fic

The bridge. When Emma and Regina cannot speak to each other directly, they speak through Henry. "Tell your mother dinner is at six." — a SwanQueen joke older than the fandom.
The witness. Henry sees what his mothers do not let themselves see. The trope of Henry knowing first is canonical-fandom.
The Operation engineer. Operation Cobra (canon), Operation Mongoose (canon), Operation Swan (fanon — bringing them together romantically). Henry naming a mission is the fandom's signal that the romance is being plotted by the youngest character in the room.
The loyalty test. When the mothers fight, Henry's reaction tells the reader (and them) who was wrong. He is the moral barometer for the couple's behavior.
The protected. When danger appears, both mothers move toward Henry in synchronized fear. The image of the two of them at his hospital bed is a SwanQueen anchor scene.
The grown-up arc. In long-form SwanQueen, Henry grows up across the fic. He becomes a teen, a young adult. His changing relationship to his mothers as a couple is itself an arc.
