4. How their relationship looks in the show, stage by stage
Stage A — before prison: seduction, style, and unequal power Piper and Alex meet at a bar approximately a decade before the prison timeline. Piper still says she's "straight," or at least lives that way, and Alex draws her into her world — sexually, emotionally, and much later also criminally. Stage B — prison, anger, and re-ignition The show itself opens with Piper entering prison following her role in Alex's money trafficking, and after Alex named her at trial. From this stage already, their relationship is built on two opposite lines: immediate attraction and immediate anger. Piper grows closer to Zelda, Alex becomes entangled in a coerced-poisoned sexual relationship with CO McCullough, and the two try to redefine whether they are really each other's or just failing to detox. Netflix's official materials sum it up as a clear choice: Piper does not imagine life without Alex and moves to Ohio after her transfer.
